Sometimes, it's hard to know where to begin. I will sometimes have people fill out a basic symptom checklist just to check in on how they are functioning overall.
It's important to know that sometimes issues like depression or anxiety may mask themselves with other symptoms like sleep problems, changes in appetite, problems with attention and concentration, or a dramatic loss of sexual desire. Also, please note that it is not uncommon for people to have more than one diagnosis at once. Some people have both depression and ADD, while others experience both anxiety and OCD.
There are more comprehensive screening tools for depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, and other disorders. But if you're just starting to notice that things aren't feeling right, you may want to ask yourself if you think you are experiencing any of the following:
- Depressed mood
- Anxiety or Panic Attacks
- Sleep problems
- Problems with attention and concentration
- Eating concerns (binge/purge behaviors or calorie restriction or rapid change in weight)
- Sexual concerns or dissatisfaction
- Substance abuse
- Obsessive/ruminative thoughts
- Other compulsive behaviors (sexual, spending, any activity that feels out of your control)
- Anger issues
- Trauma or loss
- Homicidal thoughts
- Suicidal thoughts/self-harm behaviors (cutting, pinching, burning self, etc)
