Find a Therapist

Page history last edited by Keely 15 years, 1 month ago

If you're not even sure whether or not you want to be in therapy, the APA Help Center has a nice article on how a psychologist can help you, how to get started, and what kinds of questions you may want to ask a therapist before you begin.

Oftentimes, friends are the best source of a therapy referral. If someone you know has a therapist they like, you may want to find out the name of the person your friend is seeing and work with that person.

If you can't see their therapist (or you'd prefer to see someone who isn't working with your friend), that therapist may be able to make recommendations for someone who works well with your issues.

There are also websites where therapists pay to be listed and you can search for a therapist using different criteria.

Psychology Today has a pretty user-friendly Therapy Directory and allows you to search by zipcode and speciality area.

If you are a sexual minority client, it can sometimes feel a bit trickier to find someone who will be sensitive to your needs, and you may want to locate a therapist using directories such as Gaylesta (in the Bay Area), the Kink-Aware Professionals (national), or the Poly-Friendly Professionals sites (national).
